Halloween!

When you were a kid, it was all about the candy. Years later, you can still remember the excitement of getting your favorite chocolate bar in spades, and the bitter disappointment of discovering that once again, your neighbors were giving out nothing but those inferior-quality taffy things. You may have created elaborate cataloguing systems for your candy – chocolates under the bed, lollipops in your sock drawer – or a byzantine barter system with your siblings – four dark chocolate miniatures in exchange for amnesty from a day’s chores.

Now that you’re a grown-up, you can buy your own candy – as much as you want, whenever you want, So why is Halloween still your favorite holiday? Maybe it’s because Halloween puts us in touch with the magical – something that’s notably absent in our sensible grown-up lives. As the sun goes down and the chilly fall wind whips leaves around in an eerie dance, even the most level-headed adults must admit that there’s something in the air on Halloween night, a ghost of a chance that there may be, well, a ghost or two hovering about.

Perhaps it’s because on this night, even a grown-up can break free from a polished appearance and a poised demeanor to become, for just one night, an enchanted being, a terrifying beast, or a sultry sorceress. Or maybe it’s because Halloween is the one holiday that’s all about fun, pure and simple. There are no presents to buy, no stressful family dynamics to deal with, no giant dinner to cook— just playing dress-up, and enjoying time with friends.

Since kids and grown-ups love Halloween for different reasons, we thought it was about time there was a Halloween guide with a decidedly adult approach to the holiday. Let the kids run door-to-door for candy. You can celebrate in your own uniquely grown-up way. Dress up or deck the halls in orange and black. Hold a fabulous fête that will keep your friends talking until New Year’s Eve. We’ve got all the ideas you need right here.
